Introduction[]

Sue is supporting character and close friend to most of the characters in the main group as well as to many of the characters in the grade above hers. She has a keen eye for the theatrics and is part of the school's Drama club. Her closest friend is Amaya, and is rarely seen without her.

Appearance[]

Sue is a European Burmese cat, a smooth short-haired breed with creamy-blonde coloring. Her eyes are amber. Sue debuts with short neck-length hair as a middle-school student, but grows it out to shoulder height after her freshman year at Roseville high. She wears a red pendant with two green leaves from her neck.

Sue is not seen wearing clothes through the majority of the story, with exceptions only made to special events. She wore clothing resembling Christmas attire to Tess' Christmas Party in Feline Festivities and again during the following year's party in At Loose Ends. She would wear a green shirt with black pants to Daisy's party in Pillow Talk. She would wear cosplay of her fantasy MMORPG character in Guest of honor, and dressed up as Carmen Sandiego in Witch Hunt.

Personality[]

Sue is intelligent, mature and observant. She doesn't have any qualms being the person needed to break the ice or be direct with the truth of any given matter, similarly she has no issues with taking the initiative and trying to be a leader, as she did during Confrontation when she takes the lead to get the other kids home. She also shows a strong sense of justice, as she did when trying to talk them out of a situation in the same chapter, and doing her best to try and defend the others from an assault. Occasionally Sue tries to stand as the point of reason with others around her, but Sue's abrupt way of delivering the news may see her somewhat comedically punished for being a wet blanket at times. She has displayed an aptitude for doing well in her studies, albeit not on the same level as either Daisy, Abbey or Mike. Sue has an interest in the dramatics. She has some interest in nerd-culture, in her spare time she runs an online MMORPG group and runs as the Leader.

Sue is not without her own problems. Despite her given traits, Sue often struggles with being the underdog. She is overly concerned with her image, and most recently, dealing with the prospect of her being unpopular. Upon starting at Roseville High, Sue started to desire in being in the spotlight and in Out of the Frame started and ran as leader for a fan-club for secondary characters who have been neglected from the main storyline. With her leadership qualities lacking however, Sue was unable to keep the club together for more than a few minutes and keeping them from forming an angry mob. The result would still work in her favor; granting her the nerve to suddenly speak with Lucy directly and be invited to hang out with the others at lunch, earning her the chance to be in the spotlight in the story. Although, leaving her wondering at the chapter's end if it was worth it considering her aversion to drama, and the others being surrounded by it.

Sue would make further attempts to improve her status and reputation by taking on initiatives within the school, such as leading the school play and running for secretary of the student council. She would have differing results by the conclusion of both. Sue would lose to Daisy in a debate on school policy. Her play would be somewhat successful at completing its original objective with getting Mike and Lucy make up with their differences and for Mike to consider repairing the bridge he burned. But Sue would never know this, and it would be short-lived as Lucy would move towns the day afterwards with the rift between her and Mike being much larger upon Lucy's return. While Sue's play would make her popular, it would be for the wrong reasons, as David would suggest if she would be "Fixing" it the following school year, and with it being referred to by Maddison as the "The incest play". Sue would not attempt to improve her image until Popularity Contest when Sue starts to deal with the uncomfortable truth that she just isn't popular and putting her friendship with Stacy in jeopardy through her jealousy. In an attempt to get even, Sue auditions to be part of the cheerleading team. She would not be successful here either, breaking her right leg in the process. Her image would find itself in question when it found itself in the spotlight in Critical Hit, when Sue finds herself unable to do the required work, and taking her frustrations out on Paulo.

Although Sue pictures herself as a leader, she does tend to come off quite bossy, though this is not directly pointed out by any of the characters.

Sue deeply cares about the people around her, and despite how direct she seems at times, really tries to listen and help them the others with their problems as was the case when Mike and Lucy were falling out, or when Jasmine got into a fight with Paulo.

History[]

Prom preparation page3 frame 5+6

Sue advertises her candidacy as Mike's partner for the Prom.

Sue is understood to be an acquaintance to many of the friends in the main group during the middle-school years, being in the same class but not being part of the circle of friends until Out of the frame and thus making some small appearances in each of the chapters. Sue's earliest appearance in Unfit for Education has her inviting people to be part of her test involving intrusive thoughts, which Lucy, Mike, Daisy, Paulo and Yashy become part of. She appears again in Prom Preparation suggesting romantic music should be played, and upon learning Lucy would not be going, proposes herself as a potential candidate as a partner for Mike. This doesn't eventuate, as Sue loses interest soon after being assaulted by Yashy, who accosts her and tells Mike that "She" would accept if he asks her. Lucy arriving and mistaking Yashy referring to herself and telling her as far as she knows, Mike doesn't date kids. Sue somewhat revolted at the thought of him dating Yashy. She gets a proper confirmaiton much later when she is eventually turned down along with the others. Sue would get another shot in Puppy Love, but would be turned down in that chapter as well.

In Show And Tell, Sue appears at the very end telling Amaya she's "Such a Tabby".

In Confrontation , Sue is an unwitting accomplice alongside Lucy, Mike, Paulo and Daisy who find themselves on a train going to nowhere following a museum trip for a school project. Sue takes the initiative and gets everyone to get off the train at the next station so they can figure out where they are, only for them to realize they've stopped at a shady town. Sue takes the lead, walking through the city and entering a nearby bar with the others before inquiring to their location and being allowed to use their phone and calls her mother to arrange a pickup. She immediately discovers that mischief has happened with Lucy not stopping Mike from taking on a bet from a patreon to eat a container full of liqueur chocolates, finding herself set-upon with Mike hugging her in a drunken stupor. She along with the others chase after Mike when he hears music and is lead into a back alley with no exit, pursued by two assailants from the bar. Sue is assaulted twice during the confrontation and indisposed of alongside Paulo and Daisy. Sue is seen again after the events in the car, and then at school delivering the report hoping all the trouble was worth it.

In Enter High school , Sue finds herself reunited and in the same grade with the other kids, much to her displeasure. When Mike asks how she spent her Summer, Sue becomes star eyed and explains after moving house she went to Canada to help her father out with the project at work, her believing the work experience would be good for later. She isn't able to get into too much detail before Paulo stops her, bored, telling her no one cares for her life story, resulting in the two fighting.

...but was it worth it?

In Out of the frame, Sue becomes jealous at not receiving the spotlight which provokes her to host and lead a support group for background characters who are neglected from the story. The group falls to pieces upon Katie stealing the spotlight suggesting they lead an angry mob, only for the spotlight to return to Sue as she reflects alongside McCain on how dysfunctional the other students and shares a moment lamenting how they feel like the only sensible people in the school. Sue leaves shortly after to look for Lucy whom is being accosted by the angry mob, where she explains and apologizes since it was all from her wanting to be part of the group, which Lucy tells her to just show up. As Lucy leaves, an ecstatic Sue bids flashes a V-sign and bids farewell to the others, who realize they've been backstabbed. Considering a possibility she might be mean, she takes a moment to think about how she's looking forward to being in the spotlight. It's only when lunch does arrive, she realizes what she might have to put up with.

Sue appears briefly in A different side at the teacher's side when Paulo fights with students in the grade above, asking her when she plans to do something. The interaction does nothing but has her punished for being a wet blanket, with "2000" laps.

In Invitation, Sue is one of the students Tess invites on a trip to the Silvershore Islands along with Mike, Lucy, Paulo, David, Daisy, Abbey and Amaya. Sue is not only ecstatic at not being forgotten but doubly-so as she discovers Amaya is also invited. With Abbey and Daisy electing not to go, and one free seat Sue deliberately makes a contradiction out aloud which summons McCain along on the trip too. Sue is not in the focus through much of the trip, in Arrival having David knock breakfast into their face in, joining the chorus in demanding David putting swimwear on, and enjoying herself at the beach. Sue is one of the kids distraught from Mike's apparent death in Search and Rescue, but becomes elated at discovery he had survived without injury. Sue starts a game of Truth or Dare towards the later part of the chapter and further into Intervention, where she dares Paulo to kiss another boy, Paulo seeing a flaw in her plan gives a kiss to Blur. After recovering from an embarrassing dare (Presumably kissing McCain), Sue asks Tess who she would have preferred to take her virginity, this eventuates with Tess and Paulo fighting and the latter running off. Alone with Paulo, David suggests Sue as a possible romantic interest, but Paulo shoots this down as while he notes that Sue is cute, she's also "too much of a know-it all. The annoying kind of smart, not like Daisy." Sue appears again in Return as the kids return home.

Sue is present in Unrequited when the girls attempt to get to the bottom of the distress between Lucy and Mike's relationship when they need to break up a fight during lunch by pulling the former away from the lunch table. Unlike Tess and Daisy, Sue is vehement in that Lucy will eventually open up to them about her problems, and proves skeptical of Daisy's suggestion talking about boys will fix the problem. Sue calls Tess a prude when Paulo is the last person she wants to think of. Also finding Daisy's suggestion that Paulo is tender quite funny to her. Sue is flabbergasted when Lucy finally opens up to them, revealing her feelings to Mike went unreciprocated. Returning with the others, Sue lambasts Mike because of the opportunity for them to resolve both their issues. With everyone moving on focusing on Sandy, Sue hangs around Lucy, understanding that she knew Sandy too, but is far more interested in Lucy's health. Sue does her best reassuring Lucy that opening up was the right way to go as Mike would've figured things out eventually, with Lucy breaking down over Zach's belief, Sue drags her away from the table with the offer of buying her a slushy, but not before telling her "Mike isn't her only friend in the world".

In Casting Call, Sue writes a play for the school with the deceptive intention of recruiting Mike and Lucy as the main leads to help mend their fractured relationship, encouraging everyone at the lunch table to come audition. Mike auditions, albeit terribly to the pity of the Judges, consisting of Sue, Jessica and one other person. Sue approves him for the lead role to the astonishment of the others. When the auditioning for the female lead comes up with its final participant, Sue is infuriated, forcing her to frantically search through the school and eventually coming onto Lucy poking faces from outside of the detention room where Paulo is. Dragging Lucy back to the auditorium, she flips the bird to the judges, and Sue approves her for the lead without her consent. Jessica is even more infuriated and wants an explanation. Sue assures her she's got everything figured out and sits contently, neither worrying sacrificing her chance for her to write a play next year if Mike screws up, and her say on the rest of the cast for Lucy.

Sue is a spectator to the fallout between Lucy, Tess and Paulo in Back and Forth.

Sue trick or treats with the others in Mischief-Night as a laboratory assistant. Throughout the night she stays attentive towards Lucy, taking Yashy off her for a bit and ignoring the curfew. She remains with the group up until the end of the chapter when the candy is distributed around.

In Rehersal , Sue is with the other judges and trying to pressure Lucy into singing her parts, only to be unsuccessful. Lucy comes around to singing in front of them towards the very end.

In Feline Fillibuster, Sue runs for secretary of the student council. Her running is a surprise to the kids when she burst through the doors of the lunch room promoting a promise for real concern for student welfare, but collapsing mid-pitch at the table, complaining its hard to keep the energy up. Sue is joined by Jasmine who also finds herself in the lunch room with her pitch. Sue becomes deflated when promoting her own policies as the crowd disperses, and becomes infuriated when Paulo doesn't treat the position with much seriousness. As she leaves, she turns to them and reveals that freshman can't run for secretary, meaning Jasmine is already disqualified. Alone with Lucy, Sue schemes that she's able to bring about some real changes to the school, toying with the idea of being able to both influence McCain and Jasmine, but now only missing someone to represent her interests from the senior level, when Sue notices Tess. Tess turns down the offer, and Sue settles on her three quarter monopoly, but only for Abbey to appear and reveal he too is running for student secretary as well. Sue and Abbey have their debate in the auditorium, it goes off the rails when Abbey suggests all bullies get expulsed from the school, with Sue telling him he's getting his own feelings involved given his previous interactions. Abbey eventually forfeits with Sue up against Daisy, who ends up being a much better. Sue is defeated by the very end, with McCain telling her the position never had any real power anyway. Sue's last appearance is when Daisy announces she's forfeiting the position back to Abbey, much to Sue's visible distress.

Sue is invited to Daisy's birthday party in Pillow Talk, having a small role in reassuring Jasmine her relationship with Paulo isn't in a dilemma after they have their first fight. She isn't initially serious in her reassurance, making a scathing comment that Paulo would likely ditch her when she finishes eating 5 pints of ice-cream, resulting in Jasmine tossing it in her face. Only after does she make more meaningful suggestions. She has an equally small role towards the end of Carry me with the play rehearsals, where she is too busy to notice Mike and Lucy's interaction when David helps himself to the script.

Relationships[]

Lucy[]

Sue is in a very close friendship with Lucy, the beginning confirmed in Unrequited, with Sue dragging a distraught Lucy away from the lunch table and telling her "Mike isn't your only friend in the world, you know"[1].It's understood they've been closer friends since. Sue also keeps in touch over telephone[2] as seen in Back and Forth. Sue also refers to Lucy by given nickname 'Elle'.

Sue would attempt to try to repair Lucy and Mike's friendship through their inclusion as the two lead roles in her play. Though somewhat successful in getting them to eventually reconcile and talk to each other again, Sue would start to attribute her involvement to having contributed to the possible reason for Lucy leaving Roseville. She would have not have further contact with Lucy until her eventual return, and it would be in It's all in the mind when the two would be alone when Sue would profusely apologize for her involvement[3]. Lucy would appear to accept the apology, but not without poking fun at her later in Witch Hunt, when Sue forces her to join her trick-or-treating. Not necessarily ready for the occasion herself, but having a costume nearby, Lucy wears the dress she wore in the play to the distress of Sue[4]. Sue would initially appear sore being the center of the joke, but would quickly let it go.[5]

Mike[]

Sue and Mike get along quite well together. Sue had displayed some romantic interest in Mike in volume 1 as Mike was available for the junior prom[6]. This followed with Yashi attacking her. Sue would give up on Mike given his popularity and love interests.

Paulo[]

Sue and Paulo are constantly butting heads throughout the comic. In the comic Critical Hit is about a feud the two have with each other.

The BCI exclusive comic, Ice Breaker explores a (non-canonical) friendship between Paulo and Sue, where Sue tries to teach Paulo how to talk to girls.

McCain[]

Sue and McCain became acquaintances during Out of the Frame with McCain being one of the participants, bluntly asking if anyone had actually tried asking to be part of the main casts' group. He showed affection when she agreed that everyone in the school was an idiot, along with referring to him by first name, both of which were things that had never happened to him. She also bought him on the trip to the Silvershore Isles as a space had become available. He was seen again as her assistant in her effort to run as student secretary.

Before McCain's removal from the story, Veronica would reveal on her Tumblr that Sue and McCain were to be canonically and secretly dating, and this was to be revealed to the main character's in an upcoming prom event as a long-running gag, and would be reason for why he was still made appearances in the story. This is no longer canon either given earlier warnings not to demand spoilers, as they'd be written out of the story as well.[7]

Augustus[]

Augustus and Sue don't interact too often in the main story. They do interact in non-canon through the BCI comic, Sob Story, where she interview's Augustus, and gains a perspective on his life.

Trivia[]

  • A necklace based off of Sue's pendant was produced and sold for a brief period of time. It is no longer in production.
  • In the original canon, Sue's infrequent appearance was attributed to her disinterest in being involved in the other's drama.
  • In the BCI exclusive comic(non-canon) Everyday Life, Sue mentions breaking up with her boyfriend. It is unknown if this is a reference to McCain or not.
  • Sue was the first character written and was originally set to be the protagonist before Veronica took a liking to Lucy. She was initially portrayed as "Bossy and Rude"[8]
  • One prototype of BCB would be set in a magical-girl universe, Sue would have been an antagonist alongside Paulo and Daisy.[9]
