Simple Pleasures is the first chapter of Bittersweet Candy Bowl, replacing the original first chapter; Unfulfilled Days, in November of 2009. This chapter introduces the main characters in the comic as Lucy goes out for a walk on a weekend.
The chapter begins on a Saturday morning with Yashy, one of Lucy's pets leaping from her bed in an attempt to fly using two rectangular objects as makeshift wings. She fails to remain airborne and falls to the floor, damaging one of the objects. Lucy rises from her bed and inspects the two picture frames Yashy used, finding one of them with herself and Mike, a friend from school whom she has feelings for with a crack through the glass.
Lucy leaves her house tasking the family's pet, Lily in charge of looking after Yashy and Chirpy in her absence. As Lucy walks down the street she is unaware of Daisy, another friend from school calling out to her. Daisy tries several times before pulling on Lucy's tail to stop her, who in turn responds with kicking Daisy in the face in reaction. When they reconcile, Lucy reminds Daisy she's deaf in her left ear and could not hear her from earlier. Daisy explains she is looking for Mike to return his workbook. When Daisy learns she doesn't know of his whereabouts, she heads off in the opposite direction.
Lucy walks through the park, noticing the river that runs through it and being fearful of it; a result of an earlier trauma when she was a child. She is immediately slapped on the rear by another friend, Paulo, who is out skateboarding with David, and invites her to go riding with him. She reluctantly accepts and holds onto him as they ride through the park. They hit Turtle and are thrown from the skateboard with Lucy coincidentally falling into Mike's arms. He asks if Lucy is okay before turning on Paulo reminding him skateboarding is illegal in the park. Paulo demands Lucy be returned before he is carried off by David who is fearful of the Park Rangers.
Lucy notices Mike has gotten his workbook from Daisy. Mike mentions that Daisy thought Lucy was looking for something herself and asks if she had found it, before inviting her to hang out with her over an ice cream. She accepts saying she found what she was looking for.
